The Galaxy Tab is Samsung’s 7 inch Tablet touted to be a full-fledged, compact communication and entertainement device. At 1024 x 600 pixels the 7 inch SVGA screen makes for an impressive pixel density. If you are someone who spends a lot of time commuting, you will like the fact that the tablet weighs just 0.84 pounds, which makes it a good content consumption device while on the move. The Galaxy Tab will have a “Readers Hub” app for eBook aficionados.

Internally, Galaxy Tab houses practically the same hardware found in the Galaxy S GT-i9000 touchscreen smartphone. Just like the smartphone, the Galaxy Tab runs Android Froyo 2.2 update along with Android Market and Samsung Apps to download apps. The same 1.0GHz Cortex A8 Humming Bird application CPU with PowerVR SGX540 GPU remains at the heart of this tablet. Packing 512MB RAM, Samsung will offer the Galaxy Tab in 16GB and 32GB versions. Of course, you can add up to 32GB memory card in the expandable memory slot.

Android 2.2 Froyo OS packs a whole lot of goodies, which includes full-multitasking, unrestricted app access and Adobe Flash support. Android open tethering lets you connect your laptop to the web using the Tab’s 3G connection. For connectivity, Galaxy Tab will support quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks and tri-band 3G (HSUPA 5.76Mbps, HSDPA 7.2Mbps) networks. One can always use the Wi-Fi (802.11n) for faster browsing experience and use Bluetooth 3.0 for wireless connectivity with other devices/peripherals.

The tablet is capable of full HD video playback. This is worth mentioning because although the display can only provide 1024x600, the device CAN decode HD content, meaning you donot need to re-encode videos to play on the tablet. The device supports a broad range of video formats, including DivX & Xvid formats. As with video, the Tab supports a huge range of audio formats, including OGG, FLAC & AC3.

The Tab lets you make video calls over 3G with the front facing 1.3MP camera just above the display. Galaxy Tab jabs iPad by showing off its 1.3megapixel front camera and 3 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash at the back which can capture videos at 30fps.

There were concerns around porting the Android 2.2 into Tablets, considering it was developed for smartphones, but the Galaxy Tab decimates all apprenhensions and manges to run the Android 2.2 near flawlessly. The device comes with five (customisable) home screens, which you can cramp with all sorts of widgets & app shortcuts. The bottom part of the screen sports the dedicated shortcuts to the Web browser, email and the menu. The interface is simple, powerful and customisable, also, swiping through the menus is quick with almost negligible lag. The keyboard is cramped, but when held in the portrait orientation, its easy to type away using your thumbs. With swype you can type away on the Tab much more comfortably.

Samsung claims an impressive 7 hours of video playback on the 4000 mAh Li-Po battery, possibly the most CPU intensive application you can throw at the device. It’s expected that the Tab would easily a day of normal usage without wanting to be plugged in. Initial tests though have shown poor battery performance compared to the claims.
